Ego Strength

When it comes to psychology, one topic that is mentioned is the idea of ego. This can have different meanings associated with it and today we want to talk about something known as ego strength.

The Ego Defined

Before we can define what the ego is, we need to take a look at the different components that comprise our thought processes. One of these is known as the id. The id is the part of our personality that is unconscious and primarily driven by instinct. This is good to recognize as it relates more to illogical thought rather than tied to reality. The ego effectively acts as a mediator between the id and affects our ability to make decisions. This is necessary as it helps us think more rationally and helps us function in our day-to-day lives. Lastly, there is the superego which effectively provides morals to both of these concepts. Both the id and ego seek enjoyment but they need to be monitored by the superego to ensure that what we are doing is morally correct. This also breaks things down further to include our ideal self versus who we really are. All of this is important as being mindful of what it is that you want and need can help you make the most of your life along with making better decisions.

Building Your Ego Strength

Now that we know all the different components, we want to take a look at some key areas surrounding the ego. One of the most notable of these is the relation between the ego and emotional intelligence. This is defined as “the ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions.” This is extremely important as it allows you to better handle difficult situations that can cause stress. One way that high ego strength can help is with the ability to problem-solve more effectively. When we are in a calm state of mind, we can better think of how to take on different tasks. This can apply not just to an assignment, but for things that may not have clear-cut solutions such as how to improve the relationships within your life. Giving yourself the space to be yourself while also recognizing your worth is one such way to help build this type of strength.

Why It’s Important

There will be many instances where we will need to temper our egos in our lives. A good example of this can come up in conversations where we need to be mindful of those involved. While it is good to prioritize ourselves, we live in a social world, and practicing this sort of self-awareness can let us know what the needs of others are. Our ego is able to help us improve the quality of our lives while also giving us the means to enjoy ourselves as well. It is driven by enjoyment and being able to use it in a manner that acknowledges balance can give us a better approach and perspective.
