Sociology And Media

Media is something that we consume on a daily basis. It can be seen in many forms as well. From videos to art and everything in between, what we watch has an influence on our behavior. Today we want to discuss how both media and sociology are interconnected.

Sociology Explained

Sociology is defined as “the study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society.” While this is a fairly broad topic today we want to focus more on how this affects students. As students, some of the main forms of structure in our lives are school, family, peers, and work. All of these holistically integrate with one another and our relationships with each vary from our perspective. For example, how we act around our peers is inherently different than how we act around a teacher or during work. This is one example of structure coming into play as each of these has different expectations for behavior along with what we need to accomplish within each of these. School revolves around us achieving academic excellence whereas work is more focused on the tasks we accomplish. Now that we have a better understanding of how these structures work, where does media fit in?

Media Consumption

The media we consume has an impact on many things. This is important to keep in mind because we want our media to make us feel better after consuming it rather than worse. A good example of this is something such as the news. Yes, it is good to be informed and yes it's good to make an active effort to stay on top of things. With that in mind, there needs to be a healthy limit to how much of it we consume as there is often a point where it can make us feel worse. Another example of this would be scrolling through social media for the bulk of the day. In moderation, it can be entertaining and fun but in excess, it can take up a lot of time that we may be unaware of.

Where do They Meet?

Both of these topics are much more correlated than we may expect. Within the classroom, video is one such form of media that is used to help educate us. This is something that both teachers and students use alike for presentations. Music is another form of media that is in schools as well and this can be found either in the classroom, for events, or even for studying. Social media is used by schools to help highlight academic achievement along with reminding students when certain events are. Media can be extremely helpful from both a teachers and students perspective as it can enlighten us to new ways of learning. Finding the right balance with how we use it in our personal lives is good as it can help us make better decisions about what we consume. Media is used in many different structures and when done right, it can help everyone involved.
