Why Time For Yourself is Important

Our free time is one of the most valuable things we have since we can use it in a manner that empowers us. School and work are both rewarding but it's good to keep in mind how much effort they can take on our physical and mental well-being. Making space between our responsibilities can help us reclaim our time and re-frame what we care about. Today we want to talk about why time for yourself is so important for a healthy life.

Disconnecting From Things

Taking a break from things and disconnecting can make a world of difference in our mental health. One of the best examples of this is social media since it can create a sense of missing out. This mentality can be challenging since it prevents us from appreciating all the positive things we have going for us. Rather than letting ourselves get caught up in all the things happening out in the world, sometimes we need to take a break and recenter ourselves. Taking the weekend off of social media for example is an effective way to help us decompress and get back to a sense of stability. Being firm with our boundaries for having time off is another means of doing this since it can be tempting to be productive when we need rest.

Prioritizing Your Values

Free time can be extremely empowering when used properly. The best way to do that is to learn what your values are. Everyone has different things that they care about. For some, they might value the time spent on their creative hobbies such as playing an instrument or drawing. Other people might prefer to spend their time at the gym more to improve their physical health. While there are times when we may want to do multiple things in a day, sometimes we have to prioritize them. One approach to help with this is by asking yourself what's the most important thing to get done on a certain day. This can help by setting aside time for that thing and bumping it up higher on our priority list. We can't do everything in one day but we can certainly make an effort to do the thing that brings us the most enjoyment.

Self-Care

By far one of the best reasons to take time for yourself is for self-care. Making sure that our minds and body are taken care of is extremely important since it determines how happy and healthy we are. When we're healthy it's much easier to work on our goals since we're in a better frame of mind. A great example of self-care is taking the time to meditate. Meditation can help us understand how our thoughts are affecting us. It's good to consider the relationship between our thoughts and actions since we want both of them to be in a state of harmony. Time for ourselves helps us relax and de-stress which in turn, allows us to appreciate the moment.
