Play to Each Members Strengths

Leading a group can be challenging albeit rewarding. One strategy that is very helpful when leading a group is playing to the strengths of each team member. Ask your fellow classmates what they feel they’re best at and lead with that. For example, let’s say one assignment is to create a poster with information and illustrations about the topic you’ve been learning. In this instance, two of your classmates like to draw, you and another classmate deeply comprehend the information, and the last member of your team has good penmanship. Based on this information, you’ll assign each of your teammates roles; the first two will draw what you need while you and your partner come up with the information that’s needed on the poster, which the last person will ultimately write down. While you can all help each other with your tasks, you have assignments most suited to your strengths.

Be Open to Communication

Communication is an important part of any relationship, even a school one. Don’t be afraid to be open with your group members, let them know what you need from them and be respectful when assigning tasks. Once, everyone has something to do, continue an open line of communication, provide them with feedback and ask if they need any help, etc. You must also remember that communication works both ways and you need to be open to receiving feedback and constructive criticism as well. Everyone in the team has to be equally important in reaching the objective.

Encourage Others

Last but not least, going back to the significance of receiving and giving constructive criticism, it’s important for it to be positive as well. Encouragement allows for members of the group to feel useful and proud of the work they are doing. This, in turn, fuels motivation and leads to better results. Not to mention, they’ll feel more confident in what they are doing and there'll be no need for them to question whether they’re doing things correctly or not. So, if someone in your group is doing a good job, let them know, not only will it be beneficial for your team, and thus your performance, but it’ll make that person feel good.
