Why Respect Matters

Respect is one of the most fundamental rights each of us deserves. There are a few kinds of respect. The basic kind is where we mutually treat others as equals and the other kind which is earned respect. Earned respect can be determined by a variety of factors and is ideally mutual once our relationships are built up. Today we want to cover some of the reasons why respect matters.

Respect Builds Trust

Trust is a core part of being comfortable around others. This is often formed when we're close to each other and are able to share things that are personal. A good example of this is our friends that we truly care about. With friends like these one quality that often goes in tandem with trust is respect. Respect is the best means of building this sort of trust with others since it shows that we care about people. One way to work on this is by being an active listener. When we're good at communicating it shows that we're willing to put our ego to the side for the sake of hearing what someone else has to say. This is essential in every walk of life and we need to listen so we can understand where someone is coming from.

Respect is About Being Fair

One of the cornerstones of respect is the idea of fairness. Being fair involves seeing both sides as equal. As people all of us are equal. While some of us may be in higher positions of power such as a teacher versus a student, both sides are still people at the end of the day and deserve mutual respect. It's good to remember that respect towards our teachers is important since they're spending their time educating us. Time is important to consider when it comes to respect and fairness since many of us voluntarily help others out of the goodness of our hearts. When thinking about respect we need to consider the bigger picture since fairness is comprised of many aspects.

Respect is Healthy For Relationships

Respect is one of the driving forces for our relationships. This can be seen in both close friendships along with professional relationships. The respect we have for our teachers is a different form of it compared to that of our friends. Being able to foster a healthy and tolerant attitude is important since many of us come from different backgrounds. Stress can be a factor that can affect our respect for others since when we're having a hard day it can be easy to overlook others’ feelings. Being able to take time for yourself is good since it can help us step away from negativity. This is another form of care known as self-respect which ensures that we're taking care of ourselves. Life is better when we're able to provide a kind and caring ear for those around us and that starts by providing mutual respect.
