How Discipline Helps

As students, there are a multitude of life qualities that are worth working on. One of these is discipline. Discipline can be the deciding factor for our success within both schools in life because it teaches us many helpful strategies. Today we want to discuss how this helps and why it's worth the effort.

Consistency

Consistency is one of the primary benefits of discipline because of its influence on habits. Two things to consider are our negative and positive habits. A negative habit can be seen in things such as our diet where we may not be eating well. This can affect our health in a multitude of ways. Rather than letting this happen, we can choose to enact a more disciplined attitude. One way to do this is through having a consequence for it such as not being able to treat ourselves to a dessert for a week. This type of reinforcement can work well for some things but ideally, we want to focus on positive reinforcement. An example of a positive habit can be going to bed early. We can bring discipline to this by doing things such as setting an alarm for when to go to bed along with rewarding ourselves gradually for how long we do this. Understanding both of these can be helpful since we need to apply discipline differently depending on the situation.

It Pays Off

Delayed gratification is an important element of discipline. This is essentially the ability to be patient for something in the moment to get a greater payoff later. An example of this is intentionally not eating something sweet to help lose weight later. This also applies to our money habits as well. Saving up money now allows us to get bigger things in the future such as a car to get us to school or a reward we want. Having the discipline to do this can seem tricky at first. One way to help with this is by reminding yourself of what the payoff will be at the end of it. This can keep us on track with our goals while also motivating us to wait for what we really want.

Self-Control

Discipline is helpful because it can help us feel more in control of our actions. Knowing when to hold back on something can be extremely useful. An example of this is our emotions. If we feel angry about something, rather than letting it get the best of us we can opt to rethink things. This approach is often better because it can help us make better decisions overall. Discipline can teach us about the power of restraint which is necessary for many situations. Sometimes knowing when to take a step back can make all the difference. Discipline can also help us see what we truly value. A good example of this is knowing what to spend money on. Since there are so many things to use it on, we can rely on discipline to help us make the best possible choice. Promoting balance within our lives is important and discipline acts as an internal mediator for tough life choices.
