Feedback And How it Helps

Feedback along with constructive criticism are two incredibly effective tools for growth. Learning to use these effectively can help you in many different areas of your life. Today we want to talk about this and why it matters.

It Points Out What to Work on

Having a proper understanding of what we are capable of doing is extremely important. A great example of this can be seen within weight lifting. This is dependent on several factors such as muscle mass, the actual weight you're lifting, along with proper form and focus. All of these are very important to keep in mind because we need all of them to work in sync otherwise we can hurt ourselves by accident. Feedback ties into this because getting someone else's informed thoughts on a new activity can be the deciding factor between doing something properly or incorrectly. While this example is a bit more exaggerated, it highlights how exercise is one area where feedback can help us. We can also apply this to relationships as well. If we find ourselves engaging in arguments on a consistent basis, taking time to dive into this and ask the other person their thoughts can give you insight into unconscious behaviors to possibly work on. This can improve your relationship with that person along with showing them that you care.

It Showcases Your Strengths

Feedback doesn't always have to be about pointing out what to work on, in fact, it can be used in the opposite manner as well. Compliments are one of the most common forms of feedback and they can be used as a means of continuing good behavior. A great compliment is one that is both sincere and specific to someone. These sorts of compliments help break down the specific action or behavior that is working and let someone know what they're doing is good. One example of this would be telling someone that you appreciate that they are empathetic. This is good because it ensures both sides’ needs are being met and conveys a sense of mutual respect. Getting a genuine compliment is also good because it can be a positive motivator for change. While our choices shouldn't be built around requiring the approval of others, it can still be a nice positive boost at times when the change you're trying to make is actually making an impact.

It Helps You be Well-Rounded

As people we are always learning and having this sort of growth-based mindset can make it that much easier to accept feedback. It's good to remember that our ways of doing things aren't inherently perfect, but rather they're a reflection of what we have been exposed to along with a combination of our personality. Feedback can help humble us and make us more well-rounded by giving us a different perspective on our actions. It's this sort of different viewpoint that can give us the confidence needed to work on who we are so we can have a more satisfying life experience.
