Peer Mentoring And Why It’s Important

With new teaching methods emerging, one that manages to still be effective is peer mentoring. Focusing on the one to one aspects of mentoring can make a big difference for many students. Today we want to take a look at peer mentoring and why it's important.

It Provides a Similar Perspective

One way that peer mentoring can help is that it can help students relate to one another because of the similar perspective. This is good because for many students it can be easier to relate to someone of a similar age. This is largely due in part to students feeling like it is easier to connect with those who are at the same stage in their life. This isn't to say that traditional teaching isn't as effective, but this can give a helpful alternative for those who feel that they need someone who can teach them at a similar skill level. Mentoring each other helps immensely because both sides can teach things to each other while also learning new concepts. While a good teacher can go a long way, a good mentor can also accomplish the same for both parties.

It Promotes Creativity

It goes without saying that many students will need to have some element of creativity throughout their lives to find success in their future careers. With that in mind, we need to offer some semblance of incentivizing that type of thinking. Peer mentoring can help accomplish that as it allows both sides to brainstorm creative solutions for common problems within both coursework along with lectures. Peer mentoring can let students use notes along with mnemonic devices to help each other. There are also other ways students can get creative such as using flashcards or images to help associate concepts and ideas. This is good as it can be a fun way to promote learning while also using new techniques that aren't used very often in traditional lectures.

It Keeps A Sense of Community

Establishing a good community within a school matters as it helps promote a sense of unity. Peer mentoring is one such way to keep this mentality alive. This can help as it allows students make friends with each other along with honing their craft within their courses. Peer mentoring can also be shown outside of the classroom as students can introduce each other to the various events and facilities located around campus. Each of these serves to make students more comfortable in an academic environment which contributes to overall good mental health and increased performance. Even something as simple as answering questions for new students regarding courses or the culture of the school can help others fit in and make friends. Sometimes others need a helping hand, and peer mentoring can be that solution.
