Embracing Change

Change is a constant and ever-present concept within our lives. It can be sudden, or it can be expected. How we decide to handle it is essential as there are many different routes we can take. Today we want to discuss the importance of embracing change.

Looking at Change Differently

When change is unexpected it can throw us off of our natural rhythm. This can be hard to adjust to and for good reason. With that in mind, there are ways to help with this. Our perspective is one of the most important things that can help us. Let's consider this: we're in our classroom and we receive a pop quiz. One of the common reactions to this is that we may feel nervous about our performance because we didn't have an opportunity to study. Rather than viewing it like this, we can take active steps to see things differently. One way to do this is viewing it as a challenge to overcome rather than an obstacle to our happiness. This mindset lets us promote growth instead of complacency. While it's easy to say this in theory, we need to embrace new situations to fully see this mindset shift.

Trying New Things

One concept that is relevant to change is “our comfort zone.” This is related to how we feel in a situation. While it is easy to feel satisfied doing things that we are used to, there are many times where experiencing new things can help further our personal development. To do this we need to put ourselves in places where we can try things in a safe setting. School clubs are one of the best examples of this as they usually have many students who are in a similar situation. These clubs allow you to learn with others while also recognizing that they are a means to discover new topics and activities. They can also allow you to branch out into other areas within something you already know, such as a new sport. This is good as you can still be somewhat within your comfort zone without necessarily needing a large change to enjoy something.

Change Lets You Adapt

Being flexible can help you immensely and change facilitates that in a constructive manner. There are many things that are outside of our locus of control. This is okay and to be expected. We do have an influence over how we react and being aware of that can empower us. Practicing this sort of awareness involves either taking some down time, or giving ourselves a moment to think during the thing we are doing. This can give us mental clarity and help us make more informed decisions. Being able to adapt to any circumstance is a powerful ability, and it is one that we will need as we advance through school and our future careers. Understanding the things that are within our power to change and adjust such as our response or our perspective, can ultimately empower us and promote positive change in our lives.
