Making Yourself a Priority

When it comes to our priorities there are many things we need to accomplish in our daily lives. Responsibilities such as household chores or going to events are important. With that in mind, one area that we need to prioritize is ourselves. Today we want to delve into some ways to do that.

Your Health Comes First

One of the most important reasons to make yourself a priority involves your health. This can come in many forms but in this instance, we want to focus on our physical health. Our physical health is a reflection of several areas. This can include our diet along with sleep and exercise. One common phrase is “you are what you eat” and in this case it is true. When we eat foods that don't provide us the fuel we need throughout the day, it can affect our well-being in a negative light. Being mindful of what we eat is good as things such as protein can help repair ourselves after strenuous activity. Food also affects other areas such as sleep. Cutting down on sugar before bed for example is good as it can help ease the mind. Sleep can give us the break we need from activities in a manner that lets us recover. This is crucial as we can't function efficiently when we are tired. We also need rest after exercising. Exercise helps promote physical activity by giving us more energy for all the things we do. Having a good balance between all of these is needed as our health is our top priority.

Life Goals Are Personal

Another area that goes along with making ourselves a priority involves life goals. This is something that only you can decide for yourself as it has many long-reaching effects. One mistake that many students make is choosing a path that they feel is expected of them, such as a certain career choice. The problem with this is that it devalues personal aspirations for the person who goes down the career which can affect our happiness. Goals are great as they keep us motivated with both a start and endpoint. Focusing on the process is also good as it helps us have fun during each goal marker. Understanding what you want out of your goals is inherently personal to you and it's good to have that type of choice.

Your Time Matters

Our time is precious and that holds true at every stage in our lives. When it comes to prioritizing ourselves, time management is a skill that can be useful. Responsibilities have different time frames when they are due and not everything is necessarily urgent. Some activities such as cleaning your personal space may be able to be delayed if it is for something that takes higher priority such as eating. This distinction is important as certain things can't wait such as arriving to class on time. With that in mind, being aware of how you spend your free time can be good as it can let you do more while also enjoying more of what life has to offer.
