Why Initiative Matters

There are many different routes to both success and happiness within our lives. Some of us may naturally find them on our journey, while others will have to do some soul searching. One of the best ways to help with this is to take initiative. Today we want to discuss why initiative matters and how to incorporate it into your life.

It Fosters Independence

Initiative is one of the best ways to work on being more independent. It can give you the courage to take on new and engaging tasks while also demonstrating that you are more than capable of doing these things. A good example of this is seeing how initiative can help you in both school and work. In school, it shows that we don't always need to rely on someone else to try something that can be good for us. Extracurriculars are one such example of this and rather than waiting to see what's available, taking an active step to sign up for one can help us out. Too often do we let the mental hurdle of “what if?” affect our judgment. Moving out of that mindset to focusing on what can this new activity provide is much healthier because it's more optimistic.

It Gives You Motivation

Motivation is another way that initiative can help us. Goals are important to have in our lives and can be a primary source of what gets us out of bed. Pursuing higher education is one of many goals we may have and rather than waiting for the pieces to fall in place, we need to take an active step to work on them. Taking initiative with this can be something as simple as writing down all the things you want to accomplish in both a long and short time span. This is crucial because having a vision of where you want to be along with achievable milestones can be a sustainable source of motivation. Doing what makes you happy along with things that get you closer to where you want to be is good because it is one of the best forms of intrinsic motivation. Like many skills in life, initiative is best used in tandem with other qualities since it's most effective that way.

It Shows You Care

The last major way that initiative matters is that it shows that you care. This can be self-care and caring about others. Taking care of yourself is extremely important because your mind and body need to be in a good state of being in order to put your best foot forward. Taking time to meditate along with eating good food and resting when you need to are just some of the many ways to do this. Initiative helps us be more proactive with this since we can easily let these things slip by the wayside if left unchecked. Initiative also teaches us that stepping outside of the comfort zone to help others can make positive change in someone's life, and that alone is worth the effort.
