Why Expression Is Everything

Good communication can feel challenging at times depending on how it's handled. One reason for this is that it can simply be a matter of expression. Sometimes we might not always in a situation that may make us feel like we can be authentic. Overcoming these feelings of doubt is essential for our well-being and the only way to do that is by building our confidence in ourselves. Today we want to talk about why expression is everything when it comes to communication.

It's How You Say It

How you say something can matter more than what you say in many cases. One thing to consider when talking with others is tone. People are more likely to be receptive to someone who comes from a place of positivity and understanding. A good example of this is when someone takes the time to consider how you would feel about a choice. Instead of simply saying that this is the only option, giving someone else a say in the matter can help them feel more empowered. When we want to be persuasive, we have to frame things in a manner that makes both sides feel like they want to work together. Letting others know that you want both sides to succeed can go a long way toward making them more receptive.

Your Audience Matters

It's good to consider your audience when it comes to expressing yourself since different approaches can work better. A class presentation for example usually needs to be relevant and important to the topic at hand. Ideally, we want to be mindful of the tone we're trying to convey. If it's something more lighthearted, then we can add humor to help promote engagement. If it's something thought-provoking we can try asking the audience a question to help stimulate their mind. Giving a speech for someone reaching a life milestone of accomplishment is handled differently as well. In this case, we want to build the person up while getting the audience excited to celebrate what they've done. Being mindful of who is listening and then acting accordingly can help us find the best way to express ourselves.

Honesty Leads To Better Outcomes

A healthy reminder to include in each of our conversations is that we want to focus on honesty. Honesty as a whole leads to better outcomes for those involved. One of the core reasons behind this is that when we're honest it becomes much easier to build trust. Trust is essential for people to feel that they can believe in the authenticity of your words. The phrase “say what you mean” is one such example of this. Being truthful helps us get to the point along with respecting the time of those involved. Honesty also helps us reinforce the idea that being true to our thoughts helps us recognize what we value. Being honest doesn't have to be intimidating either, it's simply a matter of expressing ourselves in a manner that is respectful while also authentic.
