Kinesthetic Learning

There are many different types of learning out there and certain styles might work better for some than others. One of these is kinesthetic learning which focuses on movement and how it ties into processing information. Today we want to take a look at this and how it can help with engagement.

Hands-on Learning

Movement is the name of the game when it comes to kinesthetic learning since it actively engages our motor skills. Sports are one of the best examples of this since they challenge many of our muscles to move in harmony with one another to perform well. Some are more weighted towards certain parts of our body such as soccer for our legs. Certain sports such as weight lifting can involve specific parts or opt for a full body workout. Learning how to be flexible with our movements teaches our brain better habits so we can safely take part in these activities. This type of hands-on learning can be seen in other areas as well. An art course teaches us how to create things through movement as well. Brush strokes, drawing, and playing an instrument involve a combination of these since they require our hands and our breathing as well.

Promoting Engagement

The great thing about kinesthetic learning is how much it promotes engagement. Because we have to move our bodies it's inherently more active. Learning how to ride a bike falls under this since unless we're using an exercise bike we won't understand the nuances of riding it. Being able to time your braking along with turns is something we have to physically engage ourselves in. Movement also stimulates multiple parts of our brains which can help us in more ways than we think. Kinesthetic learning can lead to more positive action since it teaches us the value of being more proactive. There's a lot we can accomplish when we take the time to get up to do what we need or want to do and kinesthetic learning can teach us the value of that.

Group Involvement

Having others to learn with you can be extremely motivating. Kinesthetic learning allows for that in a manner that's accessible and promotes spending time with others. A physical education class is easily one of the best examples of this. Many sports are team-based and they can help students learn about how important it is to coordinate with one another. They can teach leadership skills along with how to properly communicate with one another during tense moments. This type of camaraderie is necessary since many of us will work with others we might not know too much about. Learning how to do this in a setting that's built around having fun can make getting to know others a lot easier and less stressful. It can also help students get out of their comfort zone and start learning new skills. Kinesthetic learning is extremely effective because of its ability to help us move and learn how to solve problems by being proactive.
