Why Gratitude Matters

The fast-paced nature of life can have us trying to keep up with things rather than appreciating what we have. Gratitude is an essential life skill that can help us reflect on all the good things within our lives. Today we want to take some time to discuss why gratitude matters and some ways to practice it.

It Keeps You Humble

Gratitude and humility go hand in hand since they can both keep you centered. When we are humble, we find it that much easier to listen to perspectives outside of our own. This is essential because it opens up the line of communication with others. Confidence in oneself is good, although, like most things in life, it needs to be balanced accordingly. Being confident while humble is often a good combination since it respects our own abilities while not being too bold in the process. Humility is a reminder that we are all on the same team and helps us see others as our equals. Gratitude can help us stay in this mindset and give us the means to check ourselves with our attitude and communication skills.

It's a Reminder of Your Hard Work

Many of us spend hours dedicating ourselves to our studies and our jobs and being grateful for all that effort is a good thing. Hard work takes time and gratitude is a great way to reflect on everything that we've done. It takes a lot of mental energy to dedicate yourself to something along with having to figure out the logistics of how to start and how to improve. A good example of this can be your progress in school. Each grade level gradually gets more challenging and expands upon concepts that we once found difficult. The curve eventually does start to make more sense and the feeling of accomplishment after acing an exam can be extremely satisfying. Effort is something to be proud of and learning how to cherish that can give you the motivation to learn new things.

It Promotes an Abundance Mindset

One of the last great things that gratitude helps with is that it promotes an abundance mindset. An abundance mindset is unique in that it helps us recognize that there are enough resources to go around so everyone can be successful. This is healthy because similar to optimism, it gives us a glass-half-full type of perspective. Gratitude also plays a role in this because it teaches us to find value in what is already available. Too often do we find ourselves looking towards what we don't have or feeling that it's not enough. An abundance mindset lets us see that we don't have to artificially limit ourselves to what we perceive is not enough. Gratitude is good because it helps us focus on positivity. This can lead us to positive action as well which can have a tangible effect on ourselves and others. Gratitude is worth the effort because it can ultimately give us the means to change our lives for the better.
