Commitment as a Student

One helpful life quality for students is commitment. Commitment can help us in many ways such as in our academics or even in our life outside of school. Today we want to talk about how why this quality is important and how to work on it.

Focus on Engagement

Engagement is an important aspect when it comes to commitment since we want to feel like we are truly immersed in a subject. Engagement is necessary since it can help us see the value in the activity that we are doing. Finding a healthy middle ground for something when it comes to engagement is essential because it can make even the most routine of tasks that much more compelling to do. One example of commitment is our responsibilities. These can range from doing household chores to waking up early to do a task. While some of these tasks aren't inherently fun, there are ways to make them so. If we find ourselves doing chores we can opt to listen to music to keep us centered in the thing we are doing. If we are doing homework we can choose to look at it from a different angle that interests us more, such as viewing the historical context of said topic.

Love Learning

Learning can be one of the harder things to commit to as a student. Not every topic is going to be something that jumps out at us and that is okay. Appreciating the process of learning can make committing to more complicated tasks that much easier. This is known as process-oriented thinking and this style can help us be more present-focused. Too often do we try to look at the end goal as a means of motivation when it comes to a commitment. While this can work, if it is the only means of us doing an activity it can often be unsustainable. Learning is something that we are inherently conditioned to appreciate and that is best seen when it comes to learning a language. When we are young, many of us are eager to learn how to speak and we spend hours trying to do so. The reason why this works is that we aren't worried about the end result since we're too busy trying to cohesively form words. Small steps such as slowing down our thoughts to focus on the present can help us appreciate learning along with process-oriented thinking.

Practice Discipline

Discipline is one of the last major elements when it comes to commitment. Discipline works best when used in conjunction with a routine. A routine is essentially an action or habit that we do on a consistent basis. A good example of that would be going for a walk every morning. Something as simple as this can help us love the things we do rather than simply tolerate them. When it comes to school we can establish a routine to do our homework at a specific time every day. This in turn can build up discipline to do something since it signals that this is the thing we usually do at a certain time. Commitment can be useful since it helps you follow through with things and see them through to the end.
