The Importance of Public Speaking

Building up communication skills is a crucial part of any students academic journey. Public speaking is one such example of it and students would be surprised at how helpful it can be. Here's why we feel public speaking is important.

It Builds Confidence

Feeling comfortable in social settings can make a world of difference for students. While many people fear public speaking, it can gradually help build up confidence. What makes it difficult for many people is that it is typically done in larger settings. One way to overcome this is to practice public speaking in smaller groups and gradually building up to more people. The larger the group the less personal it feels which can make it easier to help not take things to heart if someone disagrees with what you've said. Part of confidence involves being able to not interpret a difference of opinion as a personal attack and public speaking can help with that aspect. It can give you an avenue to express themselves while simultaneously working on skills needed for interpersonal relationships.

The Skills Needed Go a Long Way

Part of public speaking involves a mastery of communication and the different facets within it. While we may not be explicitly having a dialogue with someone else, we need to still be mindful of the audience along with gauging the room. Public speaking can help you understand key elements such as timing, along with integrating more charm and humor within your speeches. This is crucial as audience engagement and properly expressing yourself can make public speaking all the more interesting. Public speaking also promotes other elements of communication such as good posture along with clear and concise word choice. It can be easy to gloss over these when in smaller settings as they may not be as necessary but they can tangibly show the confidence within the speaker.

It Can Help For Your Relationships

We touched upon the idea that public speaking can help for relationships but what if there were more to it? Public speaking allows for the chance to get to learn more about the audience through the use of questions and involvement. Some public speakers go so far as to let others take stage by expressing or sharing their point of view. This is important because as tempting as it is to monologue about a topic, everyone wants to feel that their voice matters, even in a public speech. Making space for others to talk matters in personal relationships as well since it is a more tightly knit setting compared to public speaking. It's a sort of give and take approach that public speaking promotes which is a healthy attitude to take. Not only does it boost the charisma of the speaker, but it also makes someone feel like they can relate better.
