Why Breaks Help Creativity

Creative burnout can be one of the hardest things to overcome since it can feel like climbing a wall. Rather than letting these feelings get to us, we need to work with ways to help ourselves. As students, we need to be flexible enough with our routines to help us learn new ways to improve. That's why today we want to understand how to make some space for breaks and why it's so important for our well-being.

Focusing on Other Areas of Your Life

Being able to focus on other areas of your life can work wonders for creativity. Oftentimes when we give too much energy toward one thing, we can find ourselves neglecting other areas. This is necessary at times since it can be an important project or goal that we have to do in the moment. Most of the time though, a much better approach is to take some time and space away from whatever it is you're working on. It's in our most unexpected moments that we may feel the inspiration to put out some of our best work. If you find yourself feeling creative at different times of the day, work alongside that to see how it affects the process. Looking at life from a more holistic view and seeing that everything is connected can help you see the value in why we need to look at the big picture.

Mixing Things up

Routine and spontaneity are two sides of the same coin. Routine helps us make sense of the world and gives us the means to find peace by doing something we like on a consistent basis. Spontaneity gives us the ability to discover new and wonderful things that we may not realize we enjoy. One way to integrate both of these is by giving yourself a break during a project by trying something a bit new. It could involve taking time to meditate or even listening to a different genre of music. Little things like these add up over time since they effectively build the habit of self-care while also letting us expand our interests.

Finding The Balance With Productivity And Fun

By far the biggest reason why we need breaks is that they're necessary to help us balance productivity while also having fun in the process. Coming up with new things can be difficult since there are times when we have to dig deep to accomplish our responsibilities. Taking the time to go on a meditative walk or practice gratitude can go a long way for our mental well-being. Breaks allow us to recharge and replenish our energy after a long day of school. This is good because we usually put out our best work when we're well-rested. Productivity is important because we need to engage in it to get things done but learning how to love the process can give us the motivation needed to follow through. Breaks help us create these safe spaces within our lives so we can let happiness flourish.
