Pursuing Your Happiness

Being able to build your life in a manner that provides personal empowerment is important. It gives us good goals to work towards and can give us the courage to make better changes for ourselves. One aspect of this is being able to pursue happiness throughout the course of your life. We want to look at what this means along with giving some alternative ways of looking at things.

Happiness Itself

Happiness can be considered many things but first and foremost it's an emotion that signifies that we're content. This form of contentment can be caused by many things. It can be eating a food we enjoy, it could be feeling excited to start the day, it can also be the feeling we have when we're around people that we care about. Each of these is valid and for some people, they may place more priority on certain aspects of life that make them happy. Some people may consider happiness their overall goal in life. For them, it could be reaching a state of contentment with all the different elements they have. It can be having a family to call their own, a career that provides them with stability and satisfaction, it can even be hitting goals that contribute to their health.

“Happiness can be considered many things but first and foremost it's an emotion that signifies that we're content.”

Why Pursuing It Though?

Often cited from the American Declaration of Independence and commonly associated with the American dream, this is one of the most memorable parts of that doctrine. One thing that might stick out is pursuing one’s happiness. While in many cases we have to work for the things that bring us joy, what if there's another way to look at it? What if rather than pursuing happiness we create it instead? This approach helps shift the balance so that we're not striving to reach a goal post that can seem further and further away. Like any emotion, happiness isn't permanent and it's healthy to recognize that. There are days when we may feel sad or angry and these emotions are just as important to consider in the grand scheme of things.

Creating Happiness

Being able to create our happiness instead of pursuing it allows us to focus on a journey of personal empowerment. This helps us focus on the things that are within our locus of control and can give us the courage to appreciate what we have in the here and now. The present is a gift and it's up to us to appreciate it. There are many components of happiness such as gratitude that can help us retrain our minds to see the good in all that's out there. It can help us build healthier ways of thinking while still giving us the motivation to be proactive with our actions. Happiness shouldn't be something we chase since that would imply that it's not attainable in the moment. Creating happiness though allows us to make the most out of every day since it takes into account our well-being in the here and now.
