How Communication Makes a Difference

We interact with many people on a daily basis and finding the right means of doing that can be a game-changer. Too often do we find ourselves unaware of how we talk to people. This can impact both their and our lives in a significant way. Today we want to take some time to discuss how communication can make a difference.

It Sets The Tone For Relationships

Tone is a concept that applies to many different areas. In fiction, tone refers to the sort of emotion the author is trying to convey. In music, tone is relative to other things such as the pitch or loudness of a note. Tone is also relevant to relationships because things such as word choice and how you say something can affect how others perceive you on an emotional level. Ideally, we want to focus on being receptive toward others with our tone as it can determine how effective our message will be. If we sound distressed or unpleased with the situation we are in it can trickle into our conversations. This can be a slippery slope as being vulnerable can be good, but timing is crucial for this. Good communication requires an understanding of what the other side should expect from you at any given time, and establishing a healthy tone through word choice can make it much easier.

It Helps us Discuss Difficult Topics

It is inevitable that we may have to talk about life choices that can have a profound impact on us. Many students may find themselves asking questions such as “what am I passionate about?” or “what are my academic options for higher education?” These questions are important, as we may not know what is our best choice. One way that students can answer these questions is by seeking out guidance from those who have lived through these things. People such as teachers and guidance counselors are wonderful, as their wealth of knowledge can serve as a means of putting students on the right path. This also extends to parents as well, given that they have experienced many things. Opening up the line of communication is necessary as our support networks are there for us in our times of need.

It is a Necessary Life Skill

At every stage in our lives, one of the many constants that will always be there is people. Some people we may get along with and others we may disagree with. This is necessary, as there will be moments where we need to share differing viewpoints. More than anything else, this needs to be approached in a respectful manner as it promotes fairness and shows we view them as our equal. While conflict is undesirable, handling it in the right way can help make it much easier for both sides involved. Communication is key even when it comes to agreeing with others, as it is good to have a clear and concise idea of how you feel. This does require a bit of self-introspection though as we may need to prepare what we want to say before we say it. If we aren't sure how to express ourselves, then we can take a deep breath to help with that.

There are many ways that effective communication can change how we interact with others. It is needed for personal development and to properly appreciate others.
