Valuing Your Time

Our time is something that matters immensely and using it in an efficient manner can make a huge difference. Figuring out how to spend our free time is one way we can use our time better. Today we want to talk about why this concept is important along with some new perspectives that may help.

Think Long-Term

When it comes to our time, many of us are aware of how we view it on a day-to-day basis but what if we looked at it a different way? One helpful mindset shift when it comes to our time is being able to see the bigger picture. While an extra hour or two of social media today doesn't seem like much, adding it up can leave us with a lot of time that could be better spent. This is important to consider because while not all of our time needs to be used doing something productive, we can often wonder where it goes. Consider your daily activities as the process and the things you want to do in the future as your goals. This sort of mental shift can help us regain a lot of time by seeing things from a more zoomed-out perspective. Another example of this would be working towards higher education. While it may seem difficult in the moment, it's something we are building up for in the future.

Understand Your Goals

Your goals are a great means of understanding your time better because they are where we invest a lot of ourselves into. Both short-term and long-term goals play a role in this because both of them matter to us. A test is an example of a short-term goal and we need to use our time in order to get good grades for them. A final exam is a long-term goal because it’s something that we're constantly improving at during the duration of the course to do by the end of it. Both of these require us to slowly get better at and the only way to do so is by taking the time to improve. Your goals can give you a new sense of value with your time because accomplishing them can improve your overall happiness.

Make Healthy Boundaries

One of the last and most important steps toward valuing your time is by making healthy boundaries. A common example of this is staying up extremely late. Not only does this affect our circadian rhythm, but it can also leave us feeling too tired to do other activities. Sometimes we need to make a limit on how much time we put into things because we need to do it for our health. While wanting to study for many hours on end is admirable, taking a break and coming back to it when you feel better can achieve similar results but in a much more compassionate manner to your well-being. Valuing your time and valuing yourself both go hand in hand and learning to do this can improve your life for the better.
