What Contributes to Our Growth as an Individual?

There are many factors that affect who we are along with what we care about. Being mindful of what these are can give you better insight as to how we develop as an individual. Today we want to talk about what these are and how they impact us.

Biological Influences

Biology along with our genetics, play a large role in how we develop as an individual. Genetics is the “study of heredity and the variation of inherited characteristics.” This is good to know as there are many qualities that we may share with our relatives that can be found within us. This can boil down to things such as temperament along with our general health. There are also many unique aspects that separate us from our relatives which also factors into individual choice. While our biological influences serve as a baseline, we have the power to change how we react to certain things. For example, if your family has a history of less than desirable food choices, then you can take active steps to work on that within your own life. The same applies to sleeping as well, sometimes we may be more suited to working at certain times of the day and that is okay. There are many means of altering these patterns if you choose to.

Psychological Influences

Our personality is a huge factor to consider when it comes to our individual growth as each of us has different thoughts and feelings related to each circumstance. How we react to things ties into our personality traits much more than we would expect. This is a combination of our values, how we perceive the world, and our attitude toward events. For example, someone with a more outgoing personality would be more inclined to jump headfirst into social outings whereas someone more reserved may take the time and weigh the options for things. Both of these are valid and highlight that there is a myriad of ways to solve similar situations. Someone more emotionally tuned may also be more empathetic when it comes to listening versus someone who is rational and focuses on the problem-solving aspect. There are as many solutions as there are people on this earth and each of them helps in different ways.

Social-Cultural Influences

Society and culture are one of the last major influences on our personal development and these extend far beyond the other two. Depending on the culture we are raised in, we can have a significantly different worldview compared to others. This extends to other areas as well such as how the economy is doing in an area. Students who have more income effectively have more tools at their disposal compared to those from impoverished areas which does affect education for example. The same can be said for students taking classes in Europe versus America as there are different courses and curriculums that are covered. It's good to bear all of these in mind as it can help us be aware of the influences outside of our control and how they affect us as individuals.
