The Power of Persuasion

Persuasion is a very helpful skill to hone as it can help you in many different ways. From conversations to writing, this skill gives you the chance to help others see your point of view along with being able to negotiate. Today we want to cover why this is good to work on and why it matters.

Negotiation

Negotiation is one of the more common areas where we will use persuasion as this typically involves working out something between both parties. When we think about negotiation we usually focus on how to get the most out of a transaction. This approach is problematic because a good negotiator recognizes that most transactions aren't a one-time only thing. In many instances, we may interact with the other party multiple times and we want to establish a good rapport with them. Persuasion can be applied here to let the other side know that you are on the same team. We can also use this to convey what we would like out of something while also asking them what they want. Part of being persuasive involves mindfulness of the other side and trying to reach a good balance.

Helping Others

Persuasion can be used to help others in a myriad of ways. One way to do this is something known as positive peer pressure. While peer pressure normally has a negative stigma, this flips the script and changes the dynamic entirely. This revolves around the idea that our peers want us to succeed and that they want us to focus on things that are good for us. This can include our friends encouraging us to adopt a healthier lifestyle by doing exercise together or by helping us foster a growth-based mindset. Speaking up for these things is important as there are many instances where we may notice that a friend of ours is experiencing something difficult. Something as simple as telling them about what their options are or why this can help them can give them the ability to make better decisions for themselves.

Expression

At the heart of persuasion lies expression and a desire to convey how someone feels or what they want. This is good to bear in mind because there are many instances where someone may genuinely need help from someone else and they will need to express it eloquently. Working on this by focusing on good communication is a necessity. Keeping in mind things such as eye contact along with body language are two subtle ways to convey a persuasive demeanor. Open body language can be good to express that you can be trusted. Trust is another important element of this as it forms the cornerstone of respect between both sides. Being honest with the other party is one of the most common ways of building trust and this is good to keep in mind. We want to be able to feel that we have a bond with the other person as it properly conveys that we feel comfortable expressing ourselves around them.
