Happiness and Humility

For many people, happiness is one of their main goals in life. It can provide feelings of positivity while allowing you to cherish the best aspects in your life. Another concept that goes hand in hand with happiness is humility. Today we want to take some time to discuss how they're both connected.

Humility and Pride

Humility can be defined as “a modest or low view of one's importance.” The opposite of this would be pride, which can be defined as “a feeling of being better than others.” It's helpful to know how both of these work and where each of them can be applied. Let's start with pride. Pride in terms of how you view yourself in relation to others can be dangerous for several reasons. For one, it devalues others which can dismiss their thoughts, feelings, or accomplishments. This is harmful as it can easily isolate yourself from other people which can hurt interpersonal relationships along with making others feel bad. Pride in terms of being proud of your accomplishments is different as it focuses more on the individual achievements you've done. This is better but it is also good to keep in mind that some goals couldn't have been done without the help of others. On one hand an individual may have succeeded and gotten good grades through their own methods. Another perspective of this would to be proud of your accomplishments but also being mindful that others were there to help enable you to get to where you are. Some things are worth having a sense of pride, but not if it comes at the cost of alienating others or putting yourself on a pedestal.

Why Humility is the Better Approach

Now that we have a decent grasp on what pride is, where does humility fit into this? One common misconception is that humility can make you seem weak or timid. The only instance this would apply would be if it boils down to self-deprecation which would not be healthy. Given that humility relies on modesty, it makes it much easier to relate with others. One reason to opt for humility is that it can help with how you interact with others in your life. Humility teaches us that just because we may have done something somebody else has done, that it doesn't change the fact that we are still people at the end of the day. Humility reminds us that others have their own unique set of challenges that they may face similar to us. It is also good for our own personal happiness. Being humble can put us in a position where we can learn from our mistakes to see what we can change about ourselves. This is good as it can ensure that we can be mindful of how our actions impact the world around us. Humility has an effect not just on our personal relationships but on a global scale.

It’s a State of Mind

Happiness can be multiple things. It can be a sensation or a feeling or a state of mind. Humility is one such way to achieve this mindset.
