Building Trust

The relationships we build form the foundation for a stable support network. Some are easier to take care of than others but all of them require trust. Depending on your experiences, trusting others can come naturally or it can be hard to work on. With that in mind, thankfully there are some ways to help build trust and today we want to talk about them.

Trust Yourself First

If we want to build trust, we need to do that with ourselves first. One of the most apparent things that can affect us is doubt. Doubt can be difficult to manage since it makes us question our judgment. While it's good to consider multiple possibilities along with the information we've researched, we need to be okay with our choices. Trusting ourselves involves being okay with whatever happens as a result of our actions. Confidence can help us here since it trains us to respect who we are and gives us the courage to take positive action. Self-care is another form of this since it helps us establish habits that are good for our well-being such as exercise and getting enough sleep. Loving who you are is a core component of trust since it allows us to care for others once our needs are met.

Give Things Time

Trust isn't something that happens immediately, like a garden it takes time to nurture to see results. One of the best things we can do to build trust is to give things time to settle. Some people might need more space initially when getting to know someone and this is okay. Being respectful of boundaries is key since it helps both sides. Spending time with others is one of the best ways to help since it helps break down any barriers we may feel. Fun things such as playing video games or sports with one another can help emphasize teamwork and make getting to know each other easier. With trust, we need to focus on cooperation since we want others to know we're on their side.

Make Sure Things Are Mutual

Trust requires making an active effort not just to build it, but to maintain it. Trust can be easily lost depending on our actions and oftentimes it can be harder to gain. The benefit to this is that when we've built it up enough then the feeling of trust is both sincere and mutual. Awareness is a large factor with how successful we are with this since it can teach us to be more cognizant of how we treat others. Trust requires both sides to put in their fair share of effort since things shouldn't be one sided. Being proactive with spending time with people is important because closeness fosters trust. We can do this by planning events early so that everyone involved can make the necessary adjustments to be there for each other. Trust requires people to be there for each other when they need it since it can make all the difference.
