Esports And Students

Esports are a newer form of competition that many schools are slowly starting to integrate. They can offer a unique way of experiencing some of students’ favorite games in a competitive and cooperative setting. Today we want to dive into what this is and why it matters.

What Are Esports?

Esports are a sub section of video gaming which are focused on high-level competition. These can include games that involve teams or direct one on one competition. There are different benefits to both but at the core of each is competition. Typically this attracts players of varying skill levels in order to see who is the best of the best. EVO is one example of this within the fighting game community which features games such as Super Smash Bros. Street Fighter, Tekken, and more. There are also the LCS for example which is the League of Legends Championship series which appeals to fans of MOBAs, multiplayer online battle arenas. These are just a few examples of the many different options within Esports.

What Makes Esports Awesome?

With so many options what makes this so appealing? For some, the motivation of being the very best is reason enough alone to push yourself through. Team games allow for coordination and cooperation such as Rocket League for setting up goal shots or Overwatch for ultimate abilities. This is good as it incentivizes each player to bring their own unique skill set to the team and discover how to best utilize that. While team games have their own appeal, one versus one games have their own unique qualities. Given that there are less variables with fewer players, you can get a more accurate view of someone’s skill level. This also requires more self-discipline since any decisions made are inherently your own and you'll have to adapt and strategize on the fly. While each type of player will have their preference, each of them showcases talent in many different forms. There truly is an Esport for everyone.

Students, Scholarships, And Opportunity

With schools offering a new way for students to pursue their passions, Esports scholarships are a new type of opportunity available. Many schools recognize that video games offer many different benefits for students such as future career choices and the competitive side of gaming can also be a solid path. New talent is always being recruited for teams and being able to offer an environment where students can start playing as early as possible in an organized setting is a good thing. There is a certain sort of camaraderie that can only be had in these environments where everyone works together to improve. Whether that be coaches helping students, or your peers working with you to achieve a great play, this is something that brings people together for a good and fun cause. Entertainment and enjoyment are at the forefront of Esports and what better way to represent students with this passion than by giving them an avenue to do what they love.
