Helpful Communication Skills

Being good at communicating with those around you is a core part of a happy and successful life. Expressing yourself can take work at times since we need to be aware of who we are as an individual along with being mindful of who we're talking with. It takes an active effort to improve and we want to make it easy talking about a few communication skills that are worth looking into.

Be Okay With Saying No

Learning how to be comfortable with saying no can feel challenging at first but it's a necessary communication skill. It's good to take time to self-reflect and ask ourselves if we're people-pleasing. In many cases, we are which can come at the cost of neglecting our own time or needs. Often this can happen due to being unable to say no. While being open to new opportunities is good sometimes we can't or shouldn't do something since it doesn't line up with our other plans. If we can't do something because our finances aren't in the right place we can simply tell someone that it isn't in our budget currently. The same applies to our time as well. We can tell them that “our schedule this week is full but we can plan something out next week” if it's something that you genuinely want to do. Overcommiting to things isn't the right approach which is all the more reason why it's okay to say no.

Be Diplomatic

Diplomacy can help in a lot of ways. For one it's a better form of expression since it allows us to say what we want in a manner that is considerate to those around us. A good way to work on diplomacy is by being mindful of what it is you're going to say along with how you'll say it. In many cases how you express yourself can lead to people being more receptive. Kindness is something that most people are receptive to and it's good to help others know that you want to be on their side. With that said, we still need to vouch for ourselves and keep in mind our own best interests. Diplomacy requires awareness of our tone, word choice, and our overall demeanor for it to be successful.

Promote Honesty

People want to feel a sense of comfort and trust with those around them. The best way to do this is by promoting an attitude of honesty. A good way to do this is by following through on what you say you'll do. This falls under integrity which is a combination of our overall morals and it reflects who we are and what we value. People who are empathetic are able to be more understanding of those around them for example which can lead to being honest. Being an effective communicator requires knowledge and understanding of yourself and those around you along with the drive to better oneself.
