The Importance of Respect

Respect can mean many different things but mostly it’s having regard for others and understanding boundaries. Respect comes from listening to yourself and those around you and being considerate. This also helps if you want to be treated with this same courtesy. As we begin this new year, let’s take some time to recognize the importance of respect.

The Fundamentals of Respect

There are different types of respect, all of which are equally necessary. The first of which is basic respect. This focuses on the type of respect for someone you just met or aren’t familiar with. This type of respect involves manners and polite behavior and is awarded to people solely based on the fact that they are human beings. Basic respect is so fundamental because it is based upon the idea that we are all equal and deserve respect because no one is better than anyone. It is what teaches us to treat the principle the same as the custodian.

Earned Respect

The next kind of respect is that which is earned. This comes when people respect your boundaries and your choices, and this also goes both ways. You must be considerate of those around you and earn this respect which you are requesting. Your behavior towards others determines how they will react and interact with you, and vice versa.

Self-Respect

However, respect is not just something that is given to others, in fact, self-respect is just as important. Establishing boundaries and learning to say no is a huge part of respecting yourself. Once you build on this and begin to love yourself you will not allow anyone to mistreat you or disrespect you. Hold yourself in good esteem and understand what you deserve. Stand up for yourself and surround yourself with the right people.

Proper manners and respecting the boundaries of those around you are crucial to any civilized society. With all that in mind, we hope that this sheds new light on the importance of respect.
