Showing Support as a Parent

Parental support is crucial in a child’s development. Children need to know that they are loved and supported; this will allow them to feel safe and secure in themselves and their environment. Being a supportive parent means making sure your children feel okay with being themselves. This can be done by actively listening to your child, encouraging them to be the best they can be, treating them with respect, among countless other things. Today we want to talk about how to show support as a parent.

Communicate And Listen

Part of being a supportive parent is communicating and listening to your child and allowing them to be heard without fear of judgment. You don’t always need to provide solutions or share your opinions about certain situations. Creating a space where your child feels safe to communicate to you about their day, what’s happening in their lives, and even their mistakes help build an open and trusting relationship. When kids feel like you will take them seriously and try to understand their emotions, they will feel comfortable sharing them with you, allowing you to be a bigger part of their life and guiding them through their experiences.

Let Them Know You’re On Their Side

Letting your child know that you’re on their side, rooting for them to succeed can help make a difference. Showing that you care by having realistic expectations of your child is important as we don’t want to overwhelm them. It is your job to accept your child as they are, and perhaps you won’t agree with all of their choices but it’s important for them to know that they’ll have you by their side regardless.

Treat Them With Respect

Treating your children with respect is one of the best ways of showing support. They have emotions, thoughts, and opinions which are all valid. Part of this involves giving them their privacy, allowing them to express their own opinions, speaking to them as if they were adults, and involving them in decisions that will affect them. These things, and many others, show your children that you respect them and you view them as their equal. This will allow them to develop confidence in themselves as they navigate through school, and life.
